Dr Jerry Courvisanos

Position:  Associate Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Qualifications:  Ph.D.(Newcastle, Aust.), M.Comm., B. Comm., Grad.Dip.Ed. (UNSW)

Personal Profile:  As an economist, I have taught economics for 25 years in various universities in Victoria, N.S.W. and Tasmania. I have also been a consultant and adviser to local councils, regional development boards and social service organizations on effective approaches to identifying economic strengths and establishing new activities, especially in non-metropolitan regional areas.
My teaching is centred around innovation and entrepreneurship: economic history of innovation and investment, managing innovation, new venture creation, technology commercialisation, social entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial business planning, political economy of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Research Profile:

The economics of innovation and investment: My basic research is centred on understanding the processes of innovation and how they affect investment spending, business cycles and the long-term development of businesses and the economy. This work informs the applied research into how innovation and entrepreneurial activity can best be applied to regional development in Australia. The study of Australian regional innovation systems has become a priority in this latter context.

Kaleckian and Post-Keynesian Economics: This research is based on extending Michal Kalecki’s work on cycles and growth into the areas of enterprise development and innovation through the evolutionary process and behavioural analysis, with empirical investigations of manufacturing and service industries in advanced regional and national economies.
