Building the Sustainability of Community Businesses – Adult and Community Further Education Division, Office of Training and Tertiary Education, July 2005 For this project, consultants reviewed the operation of non-profit, community based adult and community education (ACE) providers to identify the key challenges to sustainability. They developed a framework which could be used by the Department and ACE providers to understand ‘sustainability’ (defined in terms of business survival) and a ‘sustainability checklist’ which could be used by organisations to assess their current position. Consultants identified a range of strategies to build the sustainability of ACE providers and prepared fifteen case studies to highlight strategies already being undertaken by organisations in the sector. To gather information for the project, consultants carried out an extensive literature review, surveyed managers of ACE organisations, conducted focus groups with key stakeholders and conducted seven interactive discussion groups.
