Dr Patrice Braun at the speaking at the MySmartGreen LaunchA NEW online program is helping Ballarat’s small businesses become more sustainable.

SmartGreen is part of a two year project and run by the University of Ballarat’s Centre for Regional Innovation and Competitiveness and the National Centre for Sustainability.

CRIC deputy Director Dr Patrice Braun said last year, businesses including Haymes Paint and King Print, worked with the project to create environmental action plans.

Dr Braun said they had used the program to reduce their carbon footprint, develop new business opportunities and encourage their clients and customers to take a “green approach” to their own businesses.

The online stage of the project aims to get 150 businesses online this year.

For $180, plus GST, businesses come together in an online cluster where they can interact, collaborate on green innovations and grow their business network.

Dr Braun said the program appeals because it was not restricted to business hours and was also tax deductable.

“It’s an investment, allowing them to optimise and create efficiency within their businesses” She said.

“It looks at opportunities to grow their businesses, sustainably, so you save money in the long term.”
