Wine & Regional Tourism: Strengthening Complementarity to Facilitate Regional Development

Researcher: PhD Candidate Pamela McRae-Williams

The primary aim of this research is to develop a robust model of the overlap of regional wine and tourism clusters and examine the scope for private and public initiatives that may influence regional tourism growth. The following statement clarifies the main area of interest in this research.

'The complementarity (overlap) of wine industry and tourism industry clusters in a region provides the conduit for strengthening wine and tourism in a region.'

The research will use regional cluster theory as the underpinning economic criteria to investigate micro cluster developments in these two industries and their overlap in wine tourism.

Three regions will be explored in this research; the Ballarat tourism and wine region, the Bendigo tourism and wine region and the Northern Grampians tourism and wine region.

I am particularly interested in researching the overlap between the wine and tourism clusters and whether or not the complementarity of this overlap can impact on the structure and development of the individual industries through the transfer of competencies.

My research is still at a formative stage and as a result I am still at the developmental stage and plan to commence data gathering in mid 2002.
